Wonderful! Thousands of lakes in the Brazilian desert

  • Aug 09, 2023

S

Lencois Maranhenses is located on the northern border of Brazil and covers an area of 300 square kilometers. There are deep blue saltwater lakes, dazzling white sand dunes, and a 70 km long coast that forms one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in the world.

If you are surprised and ask: a saltwater lake? Didn't you tell me this was a desert? Indeed, what makes this place different from ordinary deserts is that the rainfall creates crystal clear lakes between the sand dunes.

The dunes stretch 50 kilometers inward from the coast, forming a landscape like a clean white sheet. This is the reason why the place is named "Lencois", which means "sheets" in Portuguese.

Despite its desert-like appearance, Lencois Maranhenses receives 1,600 milliliters of rain per year, 300 times more than the Sahara Desert.

During the dry season, the saltwater lake evaporates to a small size or dries up completely; after the rainy season, it becomes a habitat for many fish, turtles and clams, that's how amazing it is! When the saltwater lake is filled with rain again, all the animals return, as if they had never left.

There is a hypothesis to explain this phenomenon: the eggs of fish and shrimp are still alive in the sand, and after the rainy season they are hatched as if the fish had returned.

Among the many lakes, the most famous one is called Blue Lake, which is famous for its handsome beauty. The summer heat there will be washed away by the cool water of the saltwater lake, so enjoy a bath in the crystal clear lake!
