The Ancient Theatre of Aspandos, located more than 40 kilometers from the Turkish Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya, was built in 155 AD. It is the best preserved ancient Roman theater in the world, still in regular use.
Although from the outside, the theater does not appear to be very impressive, and the overall architecture has been patched and bears the signs of age. But after nearly 2,000 years of sand and wind, during which it was also subjected to earthquakes and wars and used for other purposes, none of them were able to extensively destroy and detract from these buildings.
The theater's exquisite construction has survived almost flawlessly, with the exception of some of the gables. It is also one of the most well-preserved ancient Roman theater sites in the world to date. When I walked inside the theater, I was immediately surprised by the magnificent scene, which is indeed magnificent and shocking.
The theater has a fan-shaped stone staircase auditorium that can accommodate 7,000 people, with a diameter of 96 meters, neatly and regularly arranged. The auditorium has 41 steps, divided into two parts, 20 steps up and 21 steps down. At the top, there is a promenade with 59 arched doors running through each other, connecting the whole theater into one.
The walls of the stage are decorated with ancient Greek-style columns with exquisite details and elaborate carvings. It has been proven that the roof was once covered above the stage, but unfortunately it has been destroyed.
The Aspandos Theater has the most reasonable acoustic architecture, without the use of any sound equipment, the stage sound can be clearly transmitted to the last row of the audience, reflecting the ancient Roman exquisite architectural skills.
Due to this extraordinary sound design, the Aspandos Theatre is still being used as a theater to this day, and a grand music festival is held here every year from mid-June to early July. Always without the use of any amplification equipment, the audience sits on the 2,000-year-old stone steps to enjoy the perfect acoustics.
