Hungary is a landlocked country located in the middle of Europe, it is also an ancient European country where you can see some of the traditional cultures native to Europe, such as the cuisine. Paprika is at the heart of Hungarian cuisine, a tradition that dates back as far as the ancient Hungarians, and some dishes have been cooked with the same recipe for centuries.

Traditional Hungarian food is mainly based on meat, seasonal vegetables, dairy products and cheese. Bread is also a staple and is usually served at every meal. And soups and stews are an important part of the Hungarian table, with each region having its own traditional and special dishes. Today let's take a look at some of the various Hungarian classics!

Chicken with red pepper

This is a truly traditional Hungarian dish, simply chicken stewed in a creamy red pepper sauce, which is usually served with sour cream.

Stuffed red peppers

This is another classic Hungarian dish. The red peppers are stuffed with meat, vegetables and rice stewed in the sauce. A vegan version is also available, suitable for vegetarians.

Mangalitsa Pork/Pork Sausage

The Mangalitsa pig is a special breed of pig raised in Hungary, which is one of the fattest pigs in the world. The meat of Mangalitsa pigs can be cooked in many different ways, and the most popular ones are sausages and air-dried meat. The pork is sent to Spain and then air-dried for two years to make a delicious meal.

Fisherman's soup

This is a very traditional Hungarian soup with chili soup and thickly cut fish. In the past, this soup was cooked outdoors over an open fire.

Beef stew

This is also one of the most traditional Hungarian foods. This beef stew contains large pieces of beef, potatoes, vegetables, paprika and various spices.

Hordobaje meat pancake

This pancake contains meat, onions and spices. The meat is stewed with paprika and then put in a crepe. Then sour cream and flour are made into a sauce and drizzled on the pancake.

Cabbage wrapped meat

Marinated cabbage stuffed with meat and rice, cooked and then drizzled with sour cream.

Vegetable stew

A vegetable stew cooked with chili powder and served with tomatoes, onions and peppers. It also comes in different versions, some with potatoes, sausage, eggs or bacon in them. Each region has its own version, and each family may even have its own recipe.

Holdubaja Meat Pancake

This pancake is filled with meat, onions and spices. The meat is stewed with chili powder and then placed in a crepe. Then sour cream and flour are made into a sauce and drizzled over the pancakes.

Layered cake

The famous butter cream cake with four to five layers of almond pastry dough sandwiched in the middle with cognac or vanilla
